		<description>The PC is not Dead.

Intel was concerned that there may be a growing assumption that the PC is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Tablets, smartphones, other personal tech devices and the cloud are ostensibly replacing the more all-encompassing personal computer. But, until obsolescence becomes a possibility, right now nothing can be further from the truth. Last year, Intel produced nearly 400 million processors—just for personal computers alone. Dead? Hardly.

The video illuminated that the PC remains at the center of every tech experience. It ties your devices to together. It stores all your data. And the PC provides a level of processing unrivaled by all others. This video solution demonstrates just how relevant the PC still is, and will continue to be into the future—told with a nudge at an "Orwellian" tone.

SmartTV

The TV has been such an integral part of America. It's the center of the living room. It's become a friend, bringing our lives and our families together. 

People love the content on TV, the size and center stage that the TV holds, but they don't like it's rigidity and lack of technology now found via other devices. The Internet and TV have long been on a collision course and there have been numerous attempts at making it work. Some solutions are great, some not so great. Intel, Google, Logitech, Sony and others are now in the game and this time it is not a case of "if" or "when".  So, Intel Atom + Google Android got together and cracked this code with a Smart TV solution providing a seamless, smarter, Internet and TV experience.

So, the challenge was to create consumer and industry awareness for “Smart TV” and highlight Intel’s role in driving category innovation. While at it, introduce the Atom processor as the key technology enabling Smart TV devices. A direct and outdoor campaign was developed to visibly demonstrate Intel’s commitment to Atom and Intel’s role as a Smart TV pioneer.  The message: Intel is doing it again—reinventing, transforming, re-engineering the most sacred of devices, the beloved TV. The most integral piece of the solution was the creation of a Intel-branded channel funneling content to the consumer and associating Smart TV with Intel.

		<description>The Early Years

Brandtank's first iteration was just before and during the .com boom (1992 - 2001).  A lot of talented and nice people came through our doors and we did great, award-winning work for established brands and unique rapidly emerging companies. Our clients included: Aetna, DoubleClick, FlyCast, Hopper Paper, Liquid Audio, netLibrary, PlanetU, RichLink, Silverado Vineyards, StockPower, Symantec, Working Assets, and stalwarts like The Wall Street Journal, plus many, many more cool new companies. 

Bank of America came calling in '01 and they pulled us in-house forming the Brand &#38; Advertising team within the National Marketing group. When a move to Charlotte, N.C. was announced a couple of years later, it was time to go (uh, stay in the Bay Area).

		<description>With well over 100 brands and identities designed during my career, presented here is merely a curated selection.The gallery of identities are for small, emerging and larger corporations. All of these logos originated either on a bar napkin, as a journal doodle, a verbal idea or sketched in AI or PS.  ANZU still survives as a restaurant in the Hotel Nikko - SF.  Niman Ranch is found in most supermarket meat cases. Many others are .coms  that were snapped up by the survivors of the age or have ceased to exist.  All in all, I've created identities for almost every conceivable product, company or service.  Even fake logos for a bike jersey in a Hal Riney TV spot for Saturn.

Sendori, the next generation exchange for direct navigation search, was acquired by Ask.com in 2009 – becoming part of the IAC family of companies. After some time refining its offering, Sendori’s management needed help to evolve the company’s brand. In working side by side with Sendori’s management team to articulate a new brand strategy, my team developed a new brand identity and also a video that helps quickly communicate the brand’s key value proposition.

By refreshing the identity we had an opportunity to not only make it more sophisticated and contemporary, but also to imbue it with meaning. In using the visual analogy of a compass, the logo reminds people that Sendori provides a more direct path from an internet user to the brands they love. Sendori's groundbreaking direct navigation service straightens the path between user and destination – helping the user and the destination brand find each other while avoiding temptations along the way.

		<description>PC Tools Internet Security includes Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus, the most awarded antispyware protection worldwide and one of the most downloaded at 160 million with a million more downloads each week. But it was time for a packaging refresh that properly positioned this value product on-shelf against more expensive competitors.  After much iteration, the final direction spoke to the robustness and strength of the product but at a lower price. The cube-based icons were based on the established brand system and acted as 'bull’s-eyes' while allowing for a system for future product extensions.

		<description>The UniCare division of WellPoint was looking for a way to raise awareness of the healthcare plan while promoting a blood drive in downtown Chicago. A train station domination campaign, heavily utilizing Duratrans backlit displays, was devised. The bodies, tastefully executed and graphically captured with a nod to healing with elegantly animated bands, contrasted boldly against the train station backdrop, commuter rush and the typical product-as-object approach of the surrounding advertising. They were noticed. The accompanying blood drive received record donations.

WellPoint recognized that the relationship with the consumer and small business healthcare audiences was broken.

1.3MM + consumers are engaged in the healthcare discussion online, but they were not engaged with healthcare insurance brands. According to a MotiveQuest study, only 1% of the top five companies had a presence in online conversations. The WellPoint brand was not standing out or standing up as a leader. Also, across the category, consumers felt they lacked information and thus control over their health insurance. They were frustrated by the confusing, difficult and costly options and out-of-date, bureaucratic processes.  We set out to change this perception.

To bridge the gap, we took a decidedly more consumerism approach, turning frustrations into benefits. Feel Better was the transformational idea designed as a filter for everything that WellPoint did. A guide for product development, a self-examining question asked of themselves everyday at every interaction with the customer. Not used as a tagline, but rather a brand idea designed into the core of their practice.

Canteen is a $2.2B vending company that was looking to transform the industry. The business landscape had evolved, changing from a client base that was mostly manufacturing to clients in new economy companies. This trend converged with legislative and consumer demands for healthier and higher quality food and beverages to be available in vending areas in businesses and schools.
 
Advances in technology allows for the re-invention of the experience of vending, in everything from machine design incorporating interactive UX to the vending transaction, as well as convenience and the offering of products beyond typical food items. I had the unique opportunity to signal this shift in the industry with a new identity and visual style for one of it's most established and significant players.

The heritage identity (above) felt dated and lacked any communication of the company's new positioning and evolved focus. Many designs were explored, narrowed  and several candidate designs were considered that better reflected the new direction for the brand.

S T R A T E G Y

The Canteen identity development anticipated the advancements in vending of non-food choices.  Much of the positioning work was predicated on the notion that more and more choices will be available, when and where the consumer wants it.

Background:

Audiences: What they think/feel now that drove the creative development? 

Canteen clients see the brand as an industry leader with great service who truly partners with their businesses. But as the largest national vending company, they expect to see Canteen play a much larger role in driving innovation. The Canteen employee are aware that although profitable, it’s a category that lacks excitement. It was important that employees believe they are part of elevating the perception of vending internally and externally. Given the relatively unchanged heritage of the brand, the identity is the single most important visual element symbolizing this shift. Franchisees were both excited and cautious. They were in favor of the idea of brand transformation, but not sure how it will be successfully implemented at their level. And lastly, amongst the B2C's, Millennials tend to be positive about societal changes such as green products and sustainability, greater ethnic diversity and advances in technology. They are multi-faceted individuals with a strong DIY sensibility and less baggage connected with vending than older generations. In fact, they are being re-introduced to vending as a way to access products they what, where they want them and are predisposed to see a “cool factor” in vending and have no issue engaging in transactions without human interaction. This opened up avenues of opportunities to have the Canteen brand adopted by the B2C audiences.

What did we want them to think—in a word? 

Vending as we’ve known it is no longer. Think Xerox, Kleenex or Goggle. Canteening is the way to deliver food, products, services (iTunes cards, etc.), whenever, wherever you want it. 

Canteening allowed the company to become known for an experience as opposed to that of an unknown dispenser. Our objective was to make canteening synonymous with a new way to vend.
